How it wears

The opening is busy in the best way. Rum gives it a sweet, heady lift, olibanum brings a wisp of resinous smoke, and a whole spice rack of cardamom, ginger and pink pepper crackles over bitter orange, bergamot and grapefruit. It smells alive. As that citrus settles, the heart turns plush: dried fruits, saffron and a soft white Tabac note wrap around sandalwood, with tuberose, osmanthus, orris and jasmine keeping a floral thread woven through the spice.

The dry down is where Hulmi earns its keep. Tonka bean and vanilla sweeten a resinous foundation of myrrh and labdanum, while patchouli, cedar, vetiver and musk anchor it to the skin. Hours in, it smells like warm amber and faint smoke on your jumper, the kind of trail people lean in to place.

Because it moves through so many stages, Hulmi is one of those scents that smells different at 9am and at midnight, and both are worth the ride. The rum and spice dominate early, the dried fruit and saffron sit in the middle of the day, and the resins and vanilla take over by evening. It is unisex in the truest sense, warm and spiced enough for a man, plush and sweet enough for a woman.
